One evening, Mira collapses at a women-only village gathering, where Munawaroh pretends not to know her to protect her standing among the conservative women. However, when the situation becomes life-threatening, Munawaroh faces a moral dilemma: help Mira deliver her baby in front of the villagers or preserve her reputation.

This story is part of my childhood memory. One time, my mother vented her anger when the neighbors refused to help my mother carry a pregnant prostitute to the car when she had to be referred to the hospital for a life-threatening delivery. This problem arose because of a myth in my village that if they helped a prostitute or an adulterer, it would jinx the 40 houses in the neighborhood. This ignorance turns into fear of helping people in need. Through this short film, I wanted to recreate the memory of the injustice that happened that night to a woman who was dying with a baby in her womb.

I wanted to tell a story about how humans should be treated equally regardless of their background. Sometimes humans look down on other humans who are considered more sinful than themselves and through this story I want to show how we should see all humans as equal. In the midst of this complicated world, we often see injustice in front of our eyes that arises because of different values. I want “Terang Bulan” to open our eyes to perspectives that we are not aware of by humanizing what is often overlooked. It helps us to recognize and empathize with social issues.
